Module 1 — Introduction to Solar Energy
Solar energy is energy obtained from the radiation emitted by the Sun. It is one of the most important renewable energy resources because sunlight is widely available and can be converted into useful electrical or thermal energy.
Learning Objectives
-
- Understand what solar energy is.
- Explain why solar energy is considered renewable.
- Understand the difference between solar photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies.
- Identify the main advantages and limitations of solar energy.
- Understand the basic process of converting sunlight into electricity.
How Solar PV Works
Photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductor materials. When sunlight reaches a PV cell, it generates an electrical current. Multiple cells are combined to form a PV module, and multiple modules can be connected to create a complete solar array.
Solar radiation reaches the photovoltaic modules.
The cells convert sunlight into direct-current (DC) electricity.
The inverter converts DC electricity into alternating-current (AC) electricity.
The electricity can be used by equipment and appliances within the facility.
Excess energy can be stored in batteries or exported to the electrical grid, depending on the system configuration.
Quick Check
What type of electricity is produced directly by photovoltaic cells?
Correct answer: B — DC electricity
